ayat quran, quran verses, nouman ali khan, quran, ayah, tafseer quran, quran explantion,Nouman ali khan lecture notes,Islam, tafseer of surah baqarah ayat 7 and 8, surah al baqarah explanation verses 7 and 8

Surah Baqarah Ayat 7 ( verse 7 ):

("Allah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearings, and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be a great torment." )

This surah began with, where Allah saying in second ayat “Their is no doubt….”
Where does doubt rest ?? In heart...right ??

Then in same ayat Allah says about guidance... where does guidance rest ? Guidance is also in heart. And then Allah talks about taqwa.Taqwa is also in heart. Then Allah talks about Imaan. Where does Imaan rest ?? In the heart.

In ayat 6,  where Allah says “those who disbelieve…..”disbelief is where?  In the heartEverything that was told in previous aayaat was the matter of heart over and over again.Everything had to do with heart. So here subject matter is heart so when it comes to sealing Allah sealed heart first, then hearing.

In surah jathiya ayat 23 (45-23). A very similar aayah comes where Allah says  “....he sealed his hearing and heart…” So what did Allah change ? So instead of sealing heart first here in surah Jathiya Allah sealed hearing first then heart. So this surah baqarah seals heart first, that surah jathiya seals hearing first...how come ? In surah Jathiya in 8th ayah Allah says...“ Who hears the Verses of Allah (being) recited to him, yet persists with pride as if he heard them not…”

What was the crime of disbeliever in surah jathiya?Refusal to listen….right?
So 15 ayah latter from the sake surah in ayat 23 when it came to sealing Allah sealed his ear first.

Subhan Allah...see how perfectly Allah SWT had placed the words. And then Allah says in their eyes their is cover. Cover means they see but they do not see. They see a messenger, they see the one with perfect character. But they had audacity to call him a liar, magician and so on...So their eyes has been cover. And for them especially for them is great punishment.

Surah Baqarah Ayat 8 ( verse 8 ):

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَا هُمْ بِمُؤْمِنِين
(  "And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day" while in fact they believe not.")

Allah SWT mentioned in this surah 3 category of people.
One who has taqwa.( true believers ).
Then Allah SWT mentioned about extreme opposite, one who are disbelievers( kafir ).
And then here Allah mentioning about third category. One who are hypocrites( munafiq ).

One who says we believe but actually they don't.ALLAH saying they are not believers at all. They are just saying it but they have no Imaan at all in their hearts.

Another interesting thing here is, When somebody says this, you would expect him to say I believe in Allah. Even though here single person is speaking but on behalf of a group by saying ”Aamanna” means we believe in Allah. But why it is so ? Because here Allah SWT is describing munafiq( hypocrites ). And one of the biggest attempt of munafiq is to seem like he is one with the believers.

He is from amongst them. So he puts himself with group and says we all have imaan in Allah. We all are the same. Then Allah says they are not believers at all. And in even In Arabic, when you say someone is not something, there are tons of ways of saying it. But ‘maa’ couple with ‘ba’ at the end, this is one of the strongest ways to say no.
In other words, Allah SWT saying they have no Imaan at all.

In this blog article, I tried to explain very little about what I understand from ayat 7 and 8 of surah Al Baqarah. This was based on my notes taken from one of the lectures of brother Nouman Ali Khan.
