In this blog article, In sha Allah I will try to explain little tafseer and beautiful insights of ayat 27 and 28 of surah Al-Baqarah. This article is my understanding based on one of the lecture of brother Nouman Ali Khan. You can find explanation of previous verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at below link :

Ayat 27 of Surah Al-Baqarah(Verse 27):
("Who break the covenant of Allah after its firm binding, and cut asunder what Allah has commanded to be joined, and spread mischief on earth. They are the utter losers.")
What covenant Allah SWT is talking about in this ayat? One covenant Allah is talking about is what we have taken before we even got here in this world. We were in the presence of Allah SWT in the form of 'Ruh'. And Allah SWT asked all of us question, "Am I not your master?" And all of us responded that of course we bear witness.
Another covenant is covenant of believing in the messenger. Means there are people even among Muslims who will listen to Quran and then make criticism of it. These are people who have already taken shahada. So Allah is talking about people who break their covenant after they had taken it.
And the Allah SWT says they cut apart what Allah has commanded to keep join and connected. Some Ulma comments that they struggle against the unity of believers, brotherhood of believers. Some Ulma also commented as Allah made the language general that all the relationship of family Allah commanded us to keep join and connected. But Faasiq cuts the relationship inside the house.i.e between husband and wife there is rift, between cousins there is a fight etc.
Also as Allah SWT including discussion of Munafiq here . One of the movement within hypocrisy even at the time of Muhammad SAW was separate the Quran from the messenger i.e The Quran from the Sunnah. They would said at Nabi SAW face that if this thing is in Quran then only we will do. These were Munafiqoon. And this ancient movement of Munafiqoon is still alive today.
And Allah SWT has commanded that 2 things be together. These 2 things are Allah’s words and his Messenger’s SAW words. But munafiq wants to separate those 2. So when you separate those 2, then you can interpret the book however you want because you are not cage by moral practice of the sunnah. Separating sunnah from Quran these ideas are actually the attack on Quran itself. If people genuinely study the Quran there is no room to make such claims.
Then Allah SWT said they cause corruption on the land. So of course others will also be affected by fasaad. But at the end of this ayah Allah SWT said they themselves are in the loss. It means harm they cause others is nothing compare to harm they cause to themselves.

Ayat 28 of Surah Al-Baqarah(Verse 28)
("How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.")
Kufr means two things. One to deny something. Second it also means to be ungrateful to someone. So here Allah SWT is saying how can any of you deny Allah and how can any of you be ungrateful to Allah SWT. Then Allah SWT is saying you used to be death and then he brought you to life. And then he will give you death again. Then he will bring you to life again. Then you will be returned back to him.
Our entire journey in life has been described in this one little tiny ayah. And conclusion of this journey is if you understand this journey then there is only one question we should be asking to ourselves, how dare I be ungrateful to Allah SWT? Because at the end of this journey, we are gonna return to him.
In this blog article, I tried to explain very little about what I understand from ayah 27 and 28 of surah Al Baqarah. This was based on my notes taken from one of the lectures of brother Nouman Ali Khan.
Nouman Ali Khan's explanation of Ayat 27 and 28 of Surah Al-Baqarah is truly enlightening! His insights into the meanings behind these verses really help in understanding the importance of keeping promises and the consequences of breaking them. It's amazing how relevant these teachings are in our daily lives. If you're looking to enhance your understanding of the Quran, I highly recommend reading Surah Yaseen as well. It's often referred to as the heart of the Quran and offers beautiful lessons and reflections. You can easily find a Surah Yaseen PDF online to read and ponder its profound messages.
