ayat quran explanation, quran verses, ayah, tafseer quran, Islam, surah al-baqarah, Nouman ali khan lecture notes on surah al-baqarah ayat 18 to 20, tafseer of surah Al-Baqarah ayah 18 to 20

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 18(Verse 18):

صُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ
( "They are deaf, mute, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path)." )

Allah SWT is saying here that they are deaf, mute, blind all 3 at the same time. So Even though there is light there, they are not able to benefit from that light. Lets understand this.
What is the harm of being deaf ? If someone says come this way, here is the light. Can they hear this? No...right ? Fine, they can't hear. May be they can call out for help. But wait, they can not do this also because they are mute too. Ok, may be they can see some one to have guidance from them. But that it is also not possible because they are blind too. (umyun). In other words All access to guidance have been taken away.

Then Allah says “La yarjiyoon”. . Which means they can't come back. But come back to what ? It means these people had light. They were where they supposed to be. Their starting point was good. Then they went back. This is a nature of hypocrite specially those who don't realise they are hypocrites. They may have come for good reasons. But they didn't had moral will, strength and character to hold onto this faith the way they should. So they went away. Therefore Allah says they are not able to come back now.

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 19(Verse 19):

( "Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers" )

Here Allah SWT is mentioning second example of Munafiq. Passage/discussion was about Munafiqoon, but passage ends with Allah saying Allah has encircled those who have kufr. Because Allah knows what's inside. The scene that Allah has given here is as follows :

They are in difficult journey and in this journey there are scary things that happens i.e climate is getting darker and there is thunder and lightning which is scary. This is describing journey that one takes into Islam. Which is not gonna be easy. It is going to be full of difficulties and challenges. But these people(munafiq) are so scared of challenges, so as they pretend that those challenges are not there only. They pretend that they don't have any responsibility. So they stick their fingers in their ears.

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 20(Verse 20):

( "The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things." )

When lightening comes, their eyes are almost blinded. They can stick their fingers in the ear. But still they can't ignore other aspect of climate. This is mentioning that even if they refuse to listen to message of Islam, there will be situation in the life of Messenger SAW and in the carriers of the believer that they have to face and those situation are so intense for them(hypocrites) that they almost lose their faith, i.e they lose their ability to see the truth.

When there is little bit of light i.e little bit of opportunity to move forward , then they go forward with believers. But when time gets tough again, then they stop, they find it scary and put their fingers in their ears. But just because situation is tough is it logical to put your finger in your ear ? Is it not idiotic thing to do ? Will it remove them from difficulty ? By means of this Allah is calling out the stupidity of hypocrisy. And Allah said that they are fool few aayat ago. Didn’t he ? So now Allah SWT is explaining us some of the aspect of their foolish behaviour.

For previous group of hypocrisy Allah Said their seeing was gone, their hearing was gone and their speaking was gone. But for this group Allah says, at least they move a little bit when the lightning strikes. So they are not completely immersed to hypocrisy yet. They still have some hope. but if Allah wants and they continue this way then Allah will take their eyesight and hearing and they will also become like previous group. In other words when believers have weak Imaan and they hear this ayah then they should better change their behavior before Allah decides worst case scenario. No doubt Allah is completely capable over all things.

In this blog article, I tried to explain very little about what I understand from ayat 18, 19 and 20 of surah Al Baqarah. This was based on my notes taken from one of the lectures of brother Nouman Ali Khan.
